Pea is among the oldest crops in the world as it was first cultivated as early as 9000 years ago. It is native to Syria, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Israel, Jordan, and Lebanon, and has been cultivated in Europe for several thousand years. It is now grown in all climatic zones, including the tropics where it is grown at high elevations.
Early in the century, first Ontario and then Manitoba led Canadian pea production. Since the mid-1980’s, Saskatchewan has produced the majority of Canadian pea with significant acreage also being grown in Alberta and Manitoba. Ontario is no longer a large scale producer.
In Saskatchewan, pea yields average 1800 lb/ac (2018kg/ha), but yields as high as 3500 lb/ac (3900 kg/ha) have been reported. About 60% of the Canadian pea crop is exported to Europe, South America, and Asia.
